Duncan Stone is one of the country's most eligible and handsome bachelors, and he wants to take me, Callie Parker, on a date. At first I am surprised and flattered, the envy of my friends. Then when our whirlwind romance escalates and he asks me to move in with him, it's like a dream come true. But as I get to really know my new boyfriend, my fairytale turns into a nightmare. Duncan is no Prince Charming. He is the Devil. Isolated from my friends and family, watched day and night, a prisoner in my own life, I know if I am going to survive, I need to escape. When a chance encounter with an old friend throws me a lifeline, I realise this is my live or die moment, and I find a hiding place deep in the Norfolk countryside. I'm supposed to feel safe here, so why do I hear footsteps outside my hideaway late at night, and sense that someone is watching me? Is it paranoia, or has Duncan managed to find me? Or perhaps the danger is closer to home than I realise.
Hi, I'm Keri Beevis, and I'm the author of the bestselling psychological suspense thrillers, Deep Dark Secrets, Dying To Tell, The Sleepover, and The Summer House.
Other titles I've written include Trust No One, Every Little Breath, The People Next Door, and The House in the Woods (previously released as The Boat House).
I am signed with Boldwood Books and my twelfth thriller, Nowhere To Hide is out 2nd April.
Callie Parker believes Duncan Stone, a much sought after celebrity bachelor, is the man of her dreams, instead, it becomes a nightmare of horrendous proportions. She has to escape and with the help of an old friend she’s now deep in the Norfolk countryside, praying that she will be safe. Her shocking experiences have made her hyperaware, is she right to her fears and paranoia or is she safe at Stable Cottage on Willow Brook Farm? Who can she trust?
It’s inevitable that a book that has domestic violence as a central premise is not an easy read, indeed, it’s very uncomfortable at times. However, it does enable you to fully understand the horrifying intensity as Callie navigates the awful chameleon character of the odious Duncan. It breaks your heart and the tension and suspense on occasions is palpable, if not off the charts. Callie is clearly very vulnerable, but she’s also resilient with a desire to survive, and of course, you absolutely root for her. She has much to put up with it with and gaslighting is the very least of it and it chills your bones.
The storytelling is fast paced, there’s a lot going on including a sub plot in Norfolk, which connects well to the main plot. There are multiple twists and turns of a dangerous ‘game’ of cat and mouse which gets darker and darker and increasingly dangerous.
The Norfolk setting is really good, it’s described well too. Callie’s love of Chester the dog shines through and thankfully he’s not harmed.
Overall, this is a well written psychological thriller with a realistic depiction of what Callie suffers, and which makes you feel desperate on her behalf. It’s hard to put down, it’s heart pounding in places but has an ending that makes me cheer.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Boldwood Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
"Nowhere to Hide" takes the compelling "one never knows what goes on behind closed doors" premise to poignant, tantalizing, deeply shocking, and terrifying new levels.
What happens when a woman's dream life turns into a nightmare?
This fast-paced, intricately plotted, and twisty tale of an abused woman determined to forge a new life was powerful, unpredictable, and unputdownable.
The book boasted strong characterizations and many GOL (Gasp Out Loud) moments.
TW: Domestic violence.
I usually shun domestic violence thrillers with painful and graphic details of abuse, but this book was in a league of its own.
In addition to being a harrowing tale of a woman relentlessly pursued by her savvy, chameleon abuser, this book is also a love story.
It's a love story between a woman and her dog. ❤️🐶❤️
Brilliantly integrated into the gripping storyline, this secondary storyline was well done, deeply touching, and much appreciated.
I listened to the audiobook read by Shakira Shute, who did an outstanding job with the narration.
Special thanks to Keri Beevis for penning one of my besties of 2024.
Whoa. This book made me fume all over my room! OMG!
Duncan Stone is a movie star, a philantropist and the most eligible bachelor in town, so when he showed interest in Callie, she couldn't believe her luck. After only dating for a few months, she already moved in with him. But, is there really a perfect guy? Or just a perfect lie?
Please let me have a go at this awful awful human being! Omg. A guy like that should never ever exist. I feel so sorry for the main character. I could really feel her pain and reluctance to trust again. Hiding and constantly looking over your shoulder is probably one of the worst things that could happen to a person. Especially, a woman.
Well, having said that, I can't say that I enjoyed this book. It wasn't really original, I've seen this plot a million times and it didn't really offer anything new. Still, a decent domestic thriller, I'm just not the right audience.
Ladies, be careful out there. Evil has a face and a name. And sometimes, they often tell you they love you.
Callie Parker cannot believe her luck when former movie star Duncan Stone asks her on a date. After a whirlwind romance, he asks her to move in with him and without a second thought she agrees. Unfortunately, hindsight is 20/20. Isolated from her friends and family, she discovers that Duncan is no Prince Charming and realizes that she needs to escape him.
While this book did not necessarily bring anything new to the psychological/domestic thriller genre, I can easily say it was a page-turner that engaged me from start to finish. I could feel the tension ramping up as the book progressed, often making me uneasy, waiting for something bad to happen. The gaslighting and cruelty Callie endured made me so angry. Keri Beevis did a great job writing Callie’s wavering emotions making it easy for me understand her mindset.
There is another mystery within the story that I thought I had figured out, but as it turns out, I had it all wrong. Keri Beevis is a new-to-me author, but I will definitely be checking out her backlog of books after enjoying this one. 4 stars 💫
My thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Pub date: 4/2/24.
I've read quite a few of her books, she writes fantastic psychological books. Callie Parker doesnt really get on with her family. She falls in love with a celebrity named Duncan who has a dark side. It starts gradually keeping her from her friends and telling her what to wear.if she leaves he would punish her and get violent.how does she get away from him.an old friend spots the signs and helps her to escape to the countryside.she doesnt feel safe.does he try to find her? or is it her imagination. Looking forward to reading more of her books.a great read.
I seem to be saying this a lot of late but again this is my favourite ( so far ) book by one of my favourite authors A despicable evil psycho/socio/narci in the form of famous actor Duncan makes this book a tummy wrenching read, he is the epitome of bad but written so well you will be steaming at his wilful abuse ( mental and physical ) of his unassuming girlfriend Callie, the blurb states he is the devil, he is, be prepared for him… I have to say in case you start and worry that no animals are harmed in the making of the story even if you think they are going to be The story just doesn’t let up from the get go right through to the pounding end and the interwoven ‘extra’ stories add more excitement not distraction Great characters although I cant warn you enough re Duncan, top story telling and surprisingly dark twists make this a superb read, loved it
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of Nowhere to Hide by Keri Beevis.
Callie Parker meets the famous Duncan Stone at an event. He is rich, handsome, charming and one of the country's most eligible bachelors. To her surprise he is interested in her! They have a whirlwind romance as Duncan sweeps Callie off her feet. It doesn't take long before Callie is moving into his sprawling estate. Before long Callie discovers that Duncan isn't the kind loving man she fell for. He is cruel, manipulative and controlling. Callie is completely isolated and alone. She desperately wants to escape and with help from a friend she is able to escape to the countryside to a small ranch.
Callie is relieved she escaped and is in a safe place with an old friend but can't help but still feel paranoid in her little hideaway. She hears someone outside and night and wonders if someone has been in her home while she has been out Duncan is rich and powerful so who knows what lengths he would go to get her back. Has Duncan found her? What will he do to her?
I really enjoyed this book. It was suspenseful, thrilling and definitely a page turner. The depiction of abuse is brutal and felt so real and although hard to read at times, it made you feel how desperate Callie felt.
This was my first read by Keri Beeves and won't be my last. She wrote beautifully complex characters and she really knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. I read this book in 2 days and couldn't stop thinking about it when I put it down. I've never hated a character more than Duncan Stone and I've read many disturbing books! 4 star read for me!
Callie Parker was living a dream, a dream that quickly turned into a nightmare. She is newly-engaged to A-list actor Duncan Stone, whose good looks and charm thrill women around the world. Any woman would be lucky to be in Duncan’s arms - at least that’s what people think. In reality, Duncan is a sadistic abuser who will eventually kill Callie - and she knows it.
It took her a long time to confide in someone about the torture and beatings she is dealing with, but as soon as her friend Laurel gets involved, Callie makes a dangerous plan. Laurel’s brother Nico lives a secluded life, and can help Callie hide if she leaves. It takes all of her courage, but she soon finds herself leaving Devon and moving to Norfolk.
This soon becomes very similar to the movie “Sleeping With The Enemy”. Callie pretended to drown, but Duncan has his doubts. He always told Callie that if she left, he would hunt her down and kill her. Since they never found her body (because she wasn’t dead), he starts doing his own investigating. Nobody suspects that this handsome man is a monster - with his celebrity status, he has a lot of contacts and a lot of power.
The story plays out quickly, as this is definitely a horrifying and tense page-turner. Callie just wants her normal life back. Duncan just wants to make sure Callie is dead, and he will do whatever it takes to not be the bad man scorned. If the public ever finds out about his violent private life, his career will be ruined. The whole book is just a cat and mouse game until the ending, which was quite suspenseful, even if slightly cliche. 4.5 stars.
(Thank you to Boldwood Books, Keri Beevis and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on April 2, 2024.)
This was my first book by the author and overall I enjoyed it. The main plot line follows a woman escaping an extremely abusive relationship. It takes a look at trauma bonding which is when a person is with an abusive partner and that partner has broken down their sense of self worth to the point that they feel like their abuser is the only person who will be there for them and thus it’s way harder to leave. (Sorry I had to explain trauma bonding because I see it misused constantly) I liked that aspect of the book, I think it’s an important topic. My main “issue” with this book is that it felt surface level to me. I felt I was getting all the information for the story but wasn’t connected deeper to it, if that makes sense. I could’ve used more backstory anecdotes, some more build up, etc to feel connected to the characters. It was a good thriller, but not incredible. I will try another book by this author.
HOLY CRAP!! This book was INTENSE! This in my top thrillers of 2024. It was absolutely gripping, yet extremely emotional. Talk about twisted! I was in a chokehold from the very beginning all the way until the end. This was a beautifully written thriller. There was so much suspense buildup that I had to pause multiple times to calm myself down. The characters are well developed and complex. The author did a great job writing characters that were real. This is my first book by this author, but it won't be my last. She is moving to my auto-buy list. This was truly unputdownable.
I hated Duncan, and loved Callie. I found myself rooting for Callie, and I wanted to see her happy and thriving. I felt uncomfortable during some of the depictions of what Callie went through, but those descriptive scenes are part of what made this book great. It also made me feel for women who live through situations like this daily.
I went from being angry to sad to scared to anxious to happy...all the feelings were felt during this story. Beevis did a great job creating an emotional, riveting, suspenseful, gripping and twisty thriller!
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
There's no limit some people will go for love. Duncan Stone Callie Parker in a whirlwind romance, that is no fairy-tale. A totally gripping addictive read with heartstopping chapters and clever from this outstanding author. I loved reading every single chapter
Callie thinks she landed the perfect boyfriend - the handsome former actor, Duncan. However, their relationship quickly changes. Duncan is not the man that he made himself out to be. Callie is isolated from her friends and abused by Duncan. Callie has a chance encounter with an old friend who offers her a way out. Callie escapes to the countryside but quickly fears that someone is watching her. Did Duncan already find her or is she just imaging things?
I normally like Keri Beevis' books but this one was just NOT IT. For the first ~75% of the book I was so incredibly bored. I wouldn't even classify this book as a thriller. Nothing exciting happened until the last 20% or so. There were so many times that I almost DNF but I decided to push through. Sadly wasn't worth it. The synopsis sounded really great, but the lack of any thrill or suspense made this a painful read. The present timeline was extremely boring. Life in the countryside DRAGGED on. I felt myself skimming the pages. waiting for it to be over. The past timeline, showing Callie's relationship with Duncan was more exciting. Still, not that great.
Additionally, this plot line is so overdone. I knew exactly where this book was heading. The few twists and turns that happened were so incredibly predictable. Nothing new was offered to this overdone plot line.
Thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This thriller had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish! Callie’s whirlwind romance with the handsome Duncan quickly turns into a nightmare when his charming exterior hides a dangerously controlling man. The build-up of tension as Callie realizes she needs to escape is excruciating. Just when she thinks she has found a safe hiding place, the suspense ramps up even further, making me wonder if Duncan has tracked her down or if the danger is coming from someone else. The twists and turns kept me guessing until the very last page.
This fast-paced psychological thriller sucks you in and doesn’t let go. With a compelling lead character and a villain that made my skin crawl, this book hits all the marks for an exceptional read. A must for any thriller fan or reader who likes stories with strong female protagonists. Keri’s books improve with every book she writes. In my opinion, this is the best of all she has done so far. This one should be on top of your TBR pile! I highly recommend reading it. Five big stars!
Thank you to Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
This is one of those crazy I-can't-put-it-down titles that I love to hate! Callie is enamored with her new boyfriend, movie star Duncan Stone and she quickly moves in with him, only to discover that he's overly controlling and vindictive when she doesn't do EXACTLY what he wants. Of course she must take drastic action as he's popular and no one will believe her as he could have any woman he wants. The plot vacillates between "now" and "then as we see her convoluted scheme to not only get away from his abuse, but also to exact revenge for his lies and mistreatment. It's a cat-and-mouse game that ratchets up the tension on every page! I'll be reading more of Beevis in the future! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
Holy moly…. If I hadn’t already posted my top 5 books of 2024 this would be #1 on the list! BIG big Trigger Warning for domestic abuse. This book literally had me scared for her, had my heart rate up so fast many times, and lots of twists! This was a crazy good read!!
What can I say about this book that will give it the praise that it deserves. I honestly couldn’t get enough of this book and I devoured it in one sitting. I’m not going to say what the book is about as it’s all described in the book description but I will say that for me it was one of the best books I’ve read so far this year . It really is a tough read at times there’s no denying that and there were parts that had me feeling quite anxious and had my skin crawling. This to me is the sign of a really well written book when it affects you like that. I will mention one of the main characters Duncan Stone who is truly one of the most despicable characters I’ve ever come across in any book I’ve read. The author has written all these characters so well and you will find out more about them as you read this book. I do love a good domestic thriller and this one certainly was more than good. One of my favourite books of this genre is The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean and now I will say that this one is on a par with that and one I certainly won’t be forgetting in a hurry. If I could give it more than 5⭐️ I would.
Weird. Probably my fault because I thought it was a psych thriller and it was literally just Domestic Violence. Kinda boring in that sense but disturbing in some ways so I guess I get the good reviews
I was completely drawn in by the way the story explored so many different relationships and friendships - it was beautifully written. Duncan honestly made my skin crawl - the way Callie endured his abuse was heartbreaking. I felt such a mix of emotions for her, so much empathy and also intense anger towards Duncan, especially for how he treated her and her adorable dog Chester.
Callie’s love for Chester was so touching and I found myself rooting for her the entire time. I was truly invested in her journey and deeply concerned for several of the characters along the way. And just when I thought I had things figured out, there was a twist that completely shocked me.
This was a gripping, emotional read & I couldn’t put it down!
Apparently sleeper buses are great to read entire books on lmao. Damn this woman can write an evil bastard. Very similar energy to behind closed doors which has always been a favourite psychological thriller of mine. Dark and disturbing and just very unpleasant to read, aka a fantastic book, bring on the next!!!
Not a bad read. The plot was good and I enjoyed reading how Callie went from the past to the present tense. Having to live through what she did was gruesome and im glad she was able to escape but as they say the past never leaves you. My heart was racing as she found herself running and fighting for her life once again; with no help from the people she thought she could trust.
A quick read that will leave you fuming and wanting to gut a pathetic, narcissistic poor excuse of a man. Also kudos to Laurel!!!
No, just no. This was a poorly written book (with typo/editing issues on top of that) with very few likeable characters. Either the majority of the people in the book were stupid or just blind. Callie’s family was horrible. She was portrayed as spineless, although a victim, but not in a favorable light. This was not a good book. There were horrible scenes describing abuse by her boyfriend and really it didn’t add anything to the story, which was also horrible. Skip this one. I did read all of it hoping it would eventually get better, hence the 2 star rating as opposed to one, but it just continually got worse with the horrible characters that were around. Not to mention the ridiculous side story about Anya. This was a train wreck.
2/5 stars - Almost DNF’d numerous times. Pushed through because I wanted to know how it ended. I was just really bored with it and didn’t like the way the author did the timeline of the story nor notating who was narrating the chapter.
I can’t say that I was riveted regarding this story line. It is a domestic thriller where the main protagonist is a narcissistic star named Duncan Stone. From the first moment Callie meets Duncan in her workplace she is absolutely captivated and infatuated by his good looks and charm, she feels flattered that he singles her out and has always looked for security in her relationships which she finds has always been lacking.
Callie is not overly close to her family, she recently lost her mother to cancer and her father, a top-notch surgeon remarried two years after her mother’s death. She also has a sister Phoebe, but they are not overly close. Her best friend Laurel is always there for her, and she is very attached to her dog Chester. Four months after meeting Duncan, he asks her to move in with him and she immediately accepts his offer.
With all due respect to the author it was at this point I could predict what was going to happen for the rest of the book and I was not far from wrong. I did not know the exact details, but I knew how it would all play out and it felt like a script I had read many times before, there were no major surprises regarding the storyline, and I found myself wanting to skim the pages. I did read right to the end but I after I felt like the time I had spent could have been better utilized.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another brilliant book from Keri Beevis. The story centres around an abusive relationship and may be a trigger for some people. When Callie meets Duncan she feels an immediate attraction and is so happy when he takes her out. Things start off well but when she moves in with him, she starts to see a different side to him. The first time he hits her, he’s apologetic but when it starts to happen more and more, she realises he enjoys hurting her. Callie eventually escapes and a friend of a friend lets her stay at his remote farm in Norfolk. Nico knows Callie has been hurt physically and mentally and gives her the space she needs, but he is also there if she needs him. I won’t say too much more as it will spoil it, but I will say there’s some great twists and some nail biting moments as the book progresses. This is a great psychological thriller that I’d highly recommend. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
this one had too many flashbacks for my taste, kind of 50/50 present-past chapters but maybe that's just because I wanted to know what happened next in the present too much 😩
the abuse was really intense and sometimes made me sick to my stomach, and I've read a LOT of abuse stories, fiction and non-fiction. the writing style puts you right in the scene as if you're witnessing everything yourself, so big TW for domestic abuse, beware if that's a sensitive topic for you 💕
I actually gasped at the plot twist(s), I was fooled and gagged 😭 mouth open in shock
overall not the most action-packed thriller but well written and with sensible characters (not including the mean ones), which is more than a lot of thrillers rn 🤭
